MATTEO is a leading authority of Spanish dance in America and a unique figure in the world of multicultural dance and ethnomusicology. Years of international concertising, choreographing, lecturing, researching, and writing on the subjects have won him recognition by The New York Times as the most versatile artist in the field of ethnic dance. He has appeared on CBS television as a performer and guest artist, has made six educational documentary films, and has been featured as a castanet soloist with major symphony orchestras. His choreography includes works for stage, opera, and Broadway. Matteo is the founder of the Foundation for Ethnic Dance and the author of The Language of Spanish Dance and Woods that Dance. He and his wife, the late Carola Goya, were recently named Irreplaceable Dance Treasures by the Dance Heritage Coalition.
